Readers Workshop: We focused on using Concepts About Print (CAPS) while learning to read Nursery Rhymes.  The children loved acting the poems out! We explored the ways that readers follow the text from left to right, follow the text from top to bottom, and how readers use a return sweep from line to line.  Please continue to practice reading nursery rhymes, and using the concepts about print skills, with your child at home.
Math: This week we focused on numbers 1-10.  We practiced writing the numbers, building the numbers with our hands, and counting collections of objects up to ten.  We also spent time playing games that focused on the numbers 1-10. The children are learning how to subitize dots on 10 Frame Cards to determine how many dots there are in a quick and efficient manner (such as: five dots on the top and two dots on the bottom of the ten frame card means there are seven dots in all). We also worked on Tally Marks! The students learned about making bundles of 5 and how the 5th tally mark lays across its 4 friends. We call the 5th tally mark in a bundle, Lazy Number 5!
Math Bags: The students added another 6 sided die to their math bags. They also received numeral cards 0-10 and learned how to play the game Scrambled Numbers.
Directions for Scrambled Numbers:
*Remove the Number Card showing 0 and place it face up.
*Mix up the remaining cards and place them face down, in random order, in a straight row with the 0 as the first card on the left.
*After deciding who will go first, Player 1 picks up a card and says the number.
*Then Player 1 places the card face-up in its correct position in the line while removing the card that is in its place.
*The new card is passed to Player 2, who reads the number out loud.
*Player 2 places the card face-up in its correct position and removes the card that is in its place.
*Players continue to take turns, reading the new number, putting the number card face-up in the correct position, and passing the new number card to their partner, until all the cards are face-up in the correct sequence.
*In unison, partners count the numbers in sequence both forward beginning at 0 and backward beginning at 10.
*Players say, "Good Game!"
iPads: The students have learned how to play: Letter School, Subitize Tree, and Starfall ABCs.

We used the letters we have learned to build and write new words; such as: go, dog, cod, dad, and more!
Writers Workshop: We learned about using illustrations and labels to tell a story.  We talked about how their stories should include the 3 W’s: Who is in the story, Where does the story take place, and What is happening in the story.
Science and Global Citizenship: We continued to focus on the Habits of Mind.  We worked on persistence and managing impulsivity. We also did various team building activities and spent even more time getting to know each other.
Special Activities:
*We had our first Celebration of Learners (COL) in the gym!
*The students are learning French with Mrs. Jacobs each afternoon during our closing circle.

Number Writing Poems
0- Around we go to make zero.
1- A straight line down is so much fun, that's the way we make a one.
2- For number two go right around, then make a line across the ground.
3- Around the tree and around the tree, that's the way we make a three.
4- Down and across and down once more, that's the way we make a four.
5- Go down and around and then you stop. Finish the five with a line on top.
6- A line and a loop. 6 makes a hoop.
7- Go across and make a slant. That's the number 7 chant.
8- Make an S but do not wait. Go back up to make an 8.
9- A loop and a line. That makes a nine.
10- 1 and a 0. 10 is a hero.
